This week in funky49…

December 16th, 2009 | By 49

Is it good practice to make a blog post when I’m pimped on the web? Let’s say yes!

RFH: First, my mashup of mc chris & David Hasselhoff (which Z named “mc christmas with the hoff”) was included in a Radio Free Hipster podcast, #79! It was a really strange request but I got inspiration and something hot came out of it. The track is available in my discography section. So go download it!

symmetry breaking: Remember that particle collider that I made a song called Particle Business about? Well their “symmetry breaking” publication published a lyrical breakdown on Particle Business. Check it out! I can’t wait to see it in print!

New Remix! Roommate from Hell!

October 5th, 2009 | By 49

download!

Roommate from Hell! You know, the MC Lars song with mc chris? It’s now in my mp3/discography section! It’s a jungle remix that uses the devil’s tritone. All notes are 3 half-steps apart (or 1.5 steps) for an evil sound.

It also has me playing with my new studio toy, the Novation Nocturn. I assigned it to one of the effects that is chewing up the Amen break.

There are a few remixes of this song on MC Lars‘ website but none of that mashed up Amen breakbeat sound that mine does! Thanks to @redvoid for giving some constructive crits on the track.

Please download, share and enjoy!

Notes:

I bulldozed the original hook and intro. I pitched down the lars hook and made a ‘response’ from chris by taking what I really liked from the last part of mc chris’ outro thingy. I used Acid to arrange the track and chop up the Amens. When I was happy with the macro elements, I pulled them into ProTools. I consciously tried not to use Reason as an excuse to use PTLE8′s Vacuum for the bassline (Vacuum rocks!) and Xpand2 for the pad.

The song is really pretty simple: A pad, a bassline, vocals and beats but I like it. For bonus points, can you id the evil laugh sample in the breakdown before the chris verse?

MC Chris 0wns

Rydell and I saw MC Chris last night. If ya don’t know.. you don’t know.

First the opening acts. The first was a duo who sang with what sounded like demo patterns from your ordinary Yamaha keyboard. It did have good sound some how. They were pretty crazy/goofy and it was their job to bring smiles to the crowd. They did. The second was Tres Bien who had guitars and drums. They brought more musical professionalism to the stage. Their energy made people mosh which made me raise my elbows in defense.

I truely appreciated the third crew. They go by the name Yip-Yip. They’re synths + beats with a stage show. From what I saw and after talking with them, they use a Korg MS-10, Novation K-station, MiniMoog, Roland JP-8000, two cheesey mixers and various other gear including a funky voice modulator. Lots of resonance + cutoff filter tweaking with these avant-garde artsy beat dropping bastards. Like I said, I appreciated them a lot.

And finally MC Chris.

MC Chris owns. Great show. My fav part was during the outro of his show he rhymed the first verse of PE’s Bring the Noise. When he met EVERYONE after the show, I made sure to shake his hand, get my ticket signed and tell him that was one of my favorite moments of his show. He then asks (correctly) if I was the guy in front that was rhyming along with him. Hell yeah that was me. So know you know that MC Chris and funky49 are down with PE. I regret I didn’t ask him the question “What’s the future of Public Enemy?”

Chris took a picture of Rydell and me. Rydell complimented him in the way he used the camera correctly. MC Chris’ reply? “I’m a renaissance man”. True. That sounds like the topic of a future song if you ask me.

If ya don’t know, you know a little bit now.
