4 JANUARY 2012 – Tampa, FL, USA

BEATS, BASS AND BEAKERS! Rapbassador, the album funky49 created to promote Tampa’s Museum of Science and Industry now has a sequel: Dirty Apes Discover Science. This release is aimed at the nerds, geeks, scientists and engineers who need some hip-hop in their life. It is also for rap fans who have had their fill of songs about cars and jewelery.

Dirty Apes Discover Science is a genre-spanning work with influences from dubstep, electro-house, R&B to old school hip-hop. In the lead track “Science Like Us”, the scientific method (observation, hypothesis, prediction, experimentation, conclusion) is amazingly distilled into 8 bars of rap. “Gene Swap” humorously delves into the under-represented biological side of sex. There is praise for the humble particle in “My Electron” as well as jabs at the willful ignorance by the Insane Clown Posse. Kudos are given to everyone’s favorite internet company with “Google That”. Personal to funky49, there is mad love for the scientist/inventor in “Ben Franklin is my BFF”. The track “Particle Business” highlights the quest to discover how the universe evolved and the David and Goliath-like competition of discovery that existed between CERN in Europe, and Fermilab, outside of Chicago, IL. A music video for “Particle Business” was shot at various locations at Fermilab and was created by Dan Lamoureux of Nerdcore for Life acclaim.

Sample lyrics:

My Electron

“He’s a particle, he’s a wave, beta decay his birthday

Positron handshakes annihilates and that creates gamma rays”

Gene Swap

“Wanna do it like Mendel? In the garden like so well?

Let’s stop this gamin’ you’re cravin’ to see my stamen”

Ben Franklin is my BFF

“Didn’t go to college but he started one / Didn’t have a smile til he farted one”

funky49 is Steven Rush, a rapper and science enthusiast living in Tampa, FL. He has presented at TEDx, BarCamp Tampa, Fermilab and the National Academy of Sciences. He was named a “Nerdcore Hip-Hop All Star” by Wired magazine and performs at geek-friendly concerts such as Nerdapalooza. He is looking forward to his performance at the 2012 USA Science and Engineering Festival. Steven Rush has also been selected by NASA to participate in Tweetups at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and Space Camp in Alabama. His album Starblazer is available on iTunes, Amazon and CDBaby.

“Thank you” to the nice people who have purchased my music on CDBaby, iTunes, etc. I have gotten a check for a bit less than $80. YOU PEOPLE ROCK! For full transparency, I would like to share that I plan on buying an Akai LPK25. It’s a midi keyboard controller that’s portable! This will enable me to make more music. We both win!

New Remix! Roommate from Hell!

Monday, October 5th, 2009

download!

Roommate from Hell! You know, the MC Lars song with mc chris? It’s now in my mp3/discography section! It’s a jungle remix that uses the devil’s tritone. All notes are 3 half-steps apart (or 1.5 steps) for an evil sound.

It also has me playing with my new studio toy, the Novation Nocturn. I assigned it to one of the effects that is chewing up the Amen break.

There are a few remixes of this song on MC Lars‘ website but none of that mashed up Amen breakbeat sound that mine does! Thanks to @redvoid for giving some constructive crits on the track.

Please download, share and enjoy!

Notes:

I bulldozed the original hook and intro. I pitched down the lars hook and made a ‘response’ from chris by taking what I really liked from the last part of mc chris’ outro thingy. I used Acid to arrange the track and chop up the Amens. When I was happy with the macro elements, I pulled them into ProTools. I consciously tried not to use Reason as an excuse to use PTLE8′s Vacuum for the bassline (Vacuum rocks!) and Xpand2 for the pad.

The song is really pretty simple: A pad, a bassline, vocals and beats but I like it. For bonus points, can you id the evil laugh sample in the breakdown before the chris verse?

Rapbassador Final Stretch!

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

We’re in the final stretch for the completion of Rapbassador! I’m waiting on some collabo bass+guitar parts and some time to do cover art. Miquiel will be doing post-production mastering. Yesterday I went by MOSI Tampa to take some pictures of their Recyclosaurus for cover art. I also scanned a special piece of awesome to be included with the release. The tracklisting is as follows:

RAPBASSADOR by funky49
01 mad science (cover of a fanatical/jaylyn coffin song)
02 thats not imax
03 the future is calling
04 your body (is a world)
05 mosi got the party
06 still nerdy
07 still nerdy (chopped and screwed remix)

After Rapbassador is done, I’ve got some music with Kabuto and MC Lars.

Tampa MOSI EP in production!

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Guess what? (what?)

I’m working on a new album. It’s to support and promote my local MOSI… Museum of Science and Industry. Tampa’s MOSI has a brand new exhibit called Body Worlds. That’s one of the songs. Here are some lyrics to “Your Body is a World”

shatter apathy of anatomy, physiology
Doc Gunther thanks for your discovery
MOSI, Science and Industry
hooks it up (yeah) for all to see
what’s under the skin of humanity
ignore what’s in store? insanity.
see where I’m coming from with this
go and witness the epididymis

Another song is about MOSI itself. It’s called “MOSI got the Party” Sample lyrics:

Mariposa, butterfly in Spanish, got
MOSI in your town and that’s an advantage,
manage to adopt, so that these fliers, can’t be stopped,
Bio Works Butterfly Garden rocks

Another song pimps the IMAX theater at MOSI. This one is called “That’s Not IMAX!”
Check it!

so whatcha, whatcha wanna watch?
whateverrr, you’ll like it a lot!
animated features, ones about creatures
documentaries for all to see, what
did my Aunt Rose Marie like best?
BRRR – the sound track to Everest!
so, doesn’t matter what you got at home
it’s nothing like the MOSI Dome!

The fourth song for the EP is a bit more personal. The song is called “Still Nerdy”. Here are 32 bars of it.

got
Lil ‘Debbie hunches, Star Crunches, in my
lunches, never throwin punches in school,
never was a fool, made to feel foolish
toolish, like a big dork, cause endomorph
my body type, now I rhyme right
fat then, fat pockets now outrageous
cause voracious I’m a reader
it took some patience, girls got flirtatious,
metamorphosis from that to this
gettin’ dissed to being on the guest list
transformed outside and paradigm to be a
winner, took girls to dinner and got in her
never stopped rockin with the PCs, mp3s
and a MC they helped make me, PS
three the new Atari twenty-six fix,
never gonna stop nerd being in the mix

no chicks, no girls, no opposite sex
twenty-four baud I would connect
enter cyberspace, hello to BBS
use that smart mind that I was blessed
Coke made my glasses, my frames the worst
everyday had a pimple to burst, cursed
by feelin’ like a schlemiel, had to deal with
depression, aggression, ka turned the wheel
now i don’t feel that trouble, rubble at my feet
butterfly busted out of the geek, I speak
with faith in self, confidence wealth
retired the old me on the shelf
new school me got savour faire
now whatcha wanna compare?
sizes of the pee-pee or SATs?
scrotums or intelligence quotients?

Honestly, this is some of my proudest work as of late. 2009 is going to be a good year for rhyme! I’m also working on the music for these songs too…. using my newly upgraded Pro Tools LE 8 baby!

If I can get one extra person to Tampa’s MOSI… then its worth it! What inspired all this? Julia @ Brandtampa.com and her “Virtual Ambassador” program. I’m not much of a blogger, but I can hook up a rhyme and deliver it over my beats! I appointed myself the unofficial rapbassador (rap+ambassador) to Tampa’s MOSI. I’ve been the Chicago’s MOSI, the Franklin Institute in Philly as well as science museums in NYC and Munich. I want Tampa’s to shine the brightest!

FUNK

p.s.

sorry if i’m not the best, most prolific blogger. i feel that who the hell wants to hear from me? As Q-Tip says, check the rhyme yo.
